Devon & Cornwall Wings became a region of the GWOCGB in October 1981 with 3 people sharing the role of Rep, meetings were held in Plymouth in a pub called the Wheatsheaf on the first Sunday of the month. Since then we have had 14 different Reps, maybe surprisingly half of them are still members! Due to places closing down and shifting membership numbers we have had 10 different meeting places from pubs via schools and cafes to hotels, nowadays we meet on the third Sunday each month at the Poldark Inn, Delabole where they look after us very well.

Having tried other types of venue we find that a pub is the best if you can get a private room for the ‘business’ side of it. We have had 9 Dropouts, in the early days mainly just for the D&C members, family and friends usually held in a field behind a pub but it soon grew to incorporate the rest of GWOCGB. It took us until 1985 to host the first of our 17 Wing Dings which was at Pentewan Sands in Cornwall. As we are Devon & Cornwall Wings we do try to move the Wing Dings between the two counties but with Tregoad Park being such a lovely site with great hosts Cornwall is winning with 10. We would love to get to north Devon but have yet to find a suitable site – not for want of trying so watch this space……

In the days before a Treffen Committee we and Wessex ran the first treffen at Shepton Mallet, helping out when it was held there several years later. We were also delighted with the faith that the Treffen Committee placed in our region when they came to Wadebridge in 2010 for the 30th Anniversary Treffen, which had a lot of positive feedback.
We’ve raised money for numerous local charities even being challenged to a basketball match in wheelchairs which made us appreciate just how useless we can be! We appeared on local TV, which made us realize how long it takes to film what lands up as two minutes air time.
We’ve sailed in a raft race, flown in gliders, done Easter Egg Runs and carnivals, even a John’O’Groats/Land’s End run. Other regions may bevfamous for their ‘U’ turns but with D&C it used to be breakaway groups with us getting split up at traffic lights and junctions but always managing
to meet up in the end for tea and a laugh. Modern technology of CBs and satnav have mainly cured us of that though.
We’ve been ‘hatched, matched and dispatched’, with weddings being obviously the most enjoyable and decorative! Some of the children of early members now let their parents out to play again as they don’t need babysitting anymore, some of the grandchildren are now pillions how life goes on! We even had an unexpected new arrival with a birth at one of our Wing Dings – can any other region match that?
Members from our region have taken on national roles of Treasurer, BMF Rep, Archivist, Vice-President and Chairman of GWOCGB. Our 1983 logo has recently been given an updated look but Devon & Cornwall Wings is still around, we’ve had our ups and downs and change of membership but we seem to be around for the duration – it’s too far from here to go anywhere else!
